Question by shayd_layd: What does is mean when a gold coin has AU on it?
I was looking at a Chinese Panda coin, it says this on it: first it has a bunch of chinese symbols, after that it says .999 1/2oz Au, at the bottom of the coin it says 50.
What I am wondering, is this an actual 1/2 oz gold coin. Does the Au mean anything negative towards its value?

Au is the chemical symbol for gold. This must mean that the coin is 1/2 an ounce and 99.9% gold, with possibly a very very small percentage of other metals mixed in. It seems to me that this is a real gold coin, of course anyone can write anything on a coin that they want, but the Au certainly isn’t negative. Good for you, seems like a valuable coin.
I believe thats the mint that it was struck at. I would have to see the coin
I believe AU is the hallmark for gold which is an abreviation for its origin

Au is the simple for gold. You can see it in periodic table. Its got from word Aurum which is greek(or latin, i’m not sure) of gold. Thus Au simply means gold, nothing else.
